Application of cooling tower in nuclear power plant


The working principle of cooling towers in nuclear power plants is similar to that of conventional cooling towers, which use water evaporation to dissipate heat. Cooling towers in nuclear power plants are usually divided into two types: natural cooling towers and mechanical cooling towers, of which the mechanical cooling tower works as follows:

Mechanical cooling tower is mainly composed of tower body, packing, spray system, import and export pipes, etc. The tower body is usually concrete or steel structure with internal packing. The main function of the filler is to increase the surface area of water and promote the evaporation of water. The spray system is responsible for spraying high temperature cooling water onto the filler to make it fully in contact with the air. The inlet and outlet pipes are used to connect the cooling tower to the nuclear reactor.


The working process of the cooling tower is mainly divided into two stages: spray stage and evaporation stage. The spray stage refers to the process in which the cooling water is sprayed onto the filler by the spray system. In this process, the temperature of the cooling water is very high, so the water on the filler will quickly evaporate. At the same time, the air will also flow through the filler, so that the evaporated water is in full contact with the air, thereby taking away a lot of heat.


In the evaporation stage, water continuously evaporates on the surface of the filler, transferring latent heat to the air. At the same time, the water vapor is carried away by the air, making the temperature of the cooling water drop. This process continues until the temperature of the cooling water reaches a preset value, and then the circulating water is pumped back into the nuclear reactor for use again.

In general, the working principle of the cooling tower of a nuclear power plant is to reduce the temperature of the water by fully contacting the circulating water and the air, so that the water vapor emits heat.
